I've been into the hardcore/rave sound since '91 when I heard
tunes like "Charly" by The Prodigy and "Go"
by Moby. I was too young to be raving back then, as I was only
10! As I got older I got into trance and then started to follow
happy hardcore in ’96 – ‘97. I got more into the breakbeats
again towards 2000 and started producing and collecting records
in a serious way. My favourite period in hardcore is probably
'92 - '94, but I love it all right back to house in the eighties
up to today's fourbeat and breakbeat stuff. Apart from hardcore
I listen to all sorts of other music from reggae to scouse house!
I look up to producers like Acen as he wasn't afraid to do
things differently and all his tracks were very creative.
When he used samples he used them in an original way, which
impressed me. My other favourites from the old skool and through
to jungle are Krome & Time. "This Sound Is For The
Underground" is probably my favourite hardcore tune (along
with "Trip II The Moon (The Darkside...)" by Acen).
I admired they way they moved so smoothly from the '92 sound
to the '94 sound. I don't think they ever did anything I don't
like. Later I always thought Demo was an amazing producer
and his efforts to keep breaks alive in '99 were some of the
best hardcore tunes I've heard. They had a bit of something
for everyone.
I like music with emotion, whether it be uplifting, dark
or whatever. I try to take influences from all the music I
listen to, from hardcore (happy and breakbeat) and jungle
as well as other genres I'm into, from dub to garage to gabber
to trance. I think the way forward is a mixture of everything
like it used to be, with different moods. Tunes that sound
totally new alongside tunes that keep that authentic ruff
old skool feel. I like variety (the last three tracks I produced
were a nu skool breaks track, an old skool style track with
lots of samples and a hard house track)!
